The review of research shows that surprisingly little research has been done on the patient's concept of reality in nursing.On the basis of preliminary studies (the clinical research project "In the patient's world" started in 1993) we have discovered that suffering exists in all age groups, in both clinical and community health care.The overall purpose of this study, "The patient's way through the world of caring", is to explore and describe patterns for good caring from the patient's perspective.We are studying the patient's experience of care, the patient's way between the specialized medical service and the public medical service with the focus on both the patient's and the relatives' experiences.The aim is to reach a deeper understanding of the patient in a complex caring reality and thus to create a caring culture that is more considerate of the patient's wishes.The project has been carried out in the specialized and public medical service in Vasa and Helsinki.The data gathering methods are thematic interviews with patients and their relatives and participant observation.to be presented in Luton on 17-19 July 1996.
